May update

I am departing for Colorado tomorrow morning, so this will be the only post for the next couple of weeks until I arrive, get settled, start my field season, and maybe take a break to upload my photos and update this blog.

Until then, here are some of the photo I took the last few days.

On Friday (May 1st), I biked to school and saw this raccoon washing its paws in the ditch.  I stopped to take its photo, but it decided to wander back into the shrubs instead.

On Sunday (May 3rd), I biked the long way to school (~ 16 km) and went to Fletcher Wildlife Garden on the way back to photograph some wildlife.

Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia)

At the pond, I could hear frog calls but could not see them.

It took me a while to notice the hind leg of this frog (toad?) hiding along the edge of the pond.

There is a bee nest box set up close to the pond, and I saw a bee entering and exiting one of the straws.

Unfortunately this was the only shot I got of the bee leaving the nest.  I think it is an Osmia sp. (perhaps the blue orchard mason bee, Osmia lignaria).

My first kinglet sighting of the year, but I don't know what species this is.  Probably the Rube-crowned Kinglet (Regulus calendula).

There were also amphibians calling along the canal.  I looked down at the water and saw several American Toads (Anaxyrus americanus) along the wall of the canal.

Two toads!

Then I was at school today having lunch with labmates and loading field equipment into our vehicle.  After returning the vehicle back to the parking lot, I noticed that tulips have started blooming already.

I am kind of sad that I will be missing the Tulip Festival this year.  Here are posts about last year's event - 1, 2, and 3.

Then I went for a walk along the canal afterwards.

Fish in the canal.  I have seen many large fish (at least 50 cm long) in the canal but I don't know what species they are.  I wish this website provides photos of the different fish species.

Sunny day along Rideau Canal
Such a gorgeous day.

Originally I was going to walk to a bus stop but saw tulips blooming on the other side of the canal.  So I crossed the Hawthorne Avenue bridge and took photos of the tulips.

On the way home, I stopped by Sawmill Creek Wetland and saw this male Belted Kingfisher (Megaceryle alcyon).

Purple Finch (Haemorhous purpureus)
And two beautiful Purple Finches (Haemorhous purpureus) that allowed me photograph them up-close.
